Where the suburb data comes from

The 2025 generator read a 1,894-row CSV with no recorded source. For the revival, the table was rebuilt from Australian Bureau of Statistics open data by scripts/build_data.py, and then compared row by row with the original. This page is that comparison.

Where the 2025 table did record a remoteness level, it agrees with the ABS assignment for 891 of 897 suburbs (99.3%). The disagreements are suburbs that straddle a boundary between two remoteness areas.

How the rebuild works

Start from every 2021 ABS Suburb and Locality (SAL) in South Australia, minus the two non-places (“No usual address”, “Migratory - Offshore - Shipping”).
Join each mesh block to its SAL, Postal Area, LGA and (via its SA1) Remoteness Area, and weight it by its 2021 Census usual residents. Each suburb gets the postcode, council and remoteness area holding most of its residents; land area breaks ties for empty localities.
Attach SEIFA 2021 IRSAD scores and deciles, both national and ranked within South Australia. The ABS publishes none for 83 very small localities.
Simplify the boundaries with mapshaper@0.7.81 (Visvalingam, keep 10% of removable vertices, shared edges preserved), round to 0.0001 degrees (about 11 m), and compute a label point inside each polygon. Mock coordinates are sampled inside these simplified shapes.

ABS Postal Areas approximate Australia Post postcodes; they are not the official delivery list. Rebuild everything with uv run scripts/build_data.py.

What the site deliberately does not use

The repository also holds original/data/regional_coastal_addresses_1.9k.csv: 1,000 rows (not 1.9k), mostly Major Cities rather than regional or coastal, and in about half of them the geocoded address sits in a different suburb from the one claimed. It holds stored results from the Mapbox Geocoding API, so it stays in original/ only as a historical record of the 2025 tool; the website never reads or serves it.

The Mapbox geocoder itself is replaced by Photon for lookups, and by sampling inside ABS boundaries for mock coordinates. The site holds no API keys of its own (the optional AI feature uses yours, from your browser). The reasoning is in DR-001 and DR-003, and the table has a data card. Try the lookup.
